Fic Review: Nancy M. Griffis - Home Fires Burning
As part of the Charity Sip project, we authors volunteered to review some of our fellow author's work in something called a Review Reacharound.
My Sip, Four Years On, was reviewed by P.D. Singer and you can find that review here.
And below is my review of Home Fires Burning by Nancy M. Griffis. Well-written beautiful imagery and a talent for world-building that gives you just a taste without the drudgery of reading paragraphs and paragraphs of information – If I were to write one phrase that described this short story then the previously written sentence would be it.
Composed as part of the Charity Sips It Gets Better project, Home Fires Burning aptly portrays the theme of Getting Better without forcing the reader to sit through long hours of highly emotional prose. It's beautiful without relying on overdramatic nonsense, and the story slowly unfolds as you read, drawing you more and more into the lives of the characters. I appreciated the element of realism clinging to every word.
I also enjoyed the fact that while this fic takes place approximately twenty-five years in the future, it has a very logical progression of technology. It's not so advanced that it's unbelievable. In fact, it's a bit scary how I can completely believe this is what we have in our future.
The relationship between the two lovers (husbands actually) is very sweet and believable. I also love the glimpse's of Ryan's – the main character's – family, and how they all seem like real people rather than one dimensional faces for the sake of an appearance.
In short, it's a lovely story very well-suited to the Getting Better theme. A recommended read!
Nancy's Bio:
I grew up in MA, but moved around a lot. Left MA for Atlanta, GA at the throw of a dart on a map, and then left Atlanta for Los Angeles, CA. Most of my friends keep my addresses in pencil because who knows where I’ll end up next? I’ll be staying in SoCal, though, as I work towards getting my scripts sold and produced into actual shows while continuing to publish novels.
First thing other screenwriters ask me: What do you write, rom-coms? My answer: Hell No. My genres are scifi / action / adventure / urban fantasy / horror / gay&lesbian with hints of romance, in both scripts and novels.

My Bio, for readers interested:Nicole Wilkinson is twenty-five, happily single, and living it up in Charlotte with her mother who needs a bit of a helping hand. Born in Washington State, she was transplanted to the East Coast just before the awful teenage years and often remarks that it was like moving to a different country. She’s only been writing seriously for four years, but reading and writing have always been a passion. Nicole’s first story was written in the fourth grade and was a lively, if not strange, tale about a girl who was being inexplicably chased by spiders. Thankfully, since then, she has moved on to more interesting fare. Starting first with fan fiction that gave her a good basis in story construction, detailing, and editing, she soon shifted into works of her own. After taking a timeout to gain a degree in Environmental Resources – which has absolutely nothing to do with fictional writing whatsoever – she’s now back on track and determined to bring her stories to life.
