[Justice League] SuperBat Ficlet

a/n: I intended to post some Seireitei Monogatari drabbles, but then I forgot that they weren't edited yet. Whoops. So, while waiting for those to return, I offer a short SuperBat ficlet. Something I sketched out a coupla weeks ago, fleshed a bit more here, but it still doesn't really go anywhere. Just some angst. For those of us that like a bite of angst now and then. *grins* This fic completely stems from one of many theories I have about possible underlying issues that could arise in a SuperBat pairing. Eventually, I plan to incorporate some of the basic issues in this ficlet into a larger story. Eventually.

No title, because it's too short, but it was inspired by "Bigger," by Backstreet Boys if that helps. And yes, I said Backstreet Boys. The lyrics, people, the lyrics! lol (Author has a guilty pleasure in listening to romantic pop music. How embarrassing.) Anyway. Enjoy. And fear the unbeta'ed nature of this fic. Errant commas ahoy!

He waits for Bruce – or is it Batman right now? – to acknowledge him. He stands there for a full five minutes, watching Bruce's fingers fly across the keyboard, his eyes locked on the large screen. A tray of tea and snacks sits untouched at his side.

Alfred had given Clark a pleading glance earlier, one that spoke more than words could possibly say.

Bruce has to know that Clark is here. He has sensors to indicate when something enters the Batcave through the Batwing's hidden exit and his own awareness is too keen to miss Clark's arrival.

He still doesn't acknowledge Clark's presence. He wishes he could be surprised. But this seems a constant pattern of behavior for Bruce. And Clark knew what he was getting into from the start. He knew it wouldn't be easy.

“I've left four messages,” Clark says, loudly enough to be heard, voice neutral enough to not be taken as argumentative, despite how much he wants to show his disappointment.

The typing doesn't cease. “I received them.”

Clark twitches, and then smooths his expression back down. “You missed our date Tuesday night.” Or should he say, Bruce purposefully didn't attend and then pretended that he had forgotten.

“Crime is often inconvenient.”

Clark resists the urge to snort. He crosses his arms, taps a finger against his bicep. “You closed the window.” As in, the window that Clark usually employs on those early, early mornings when he likes to crawl into bed beside a dozing Bruce and chat.

“And yet you found a way in.” Still that same bland tone. Clark recognizes it all too well.

Well, if Bruce thinks that this is enough to shove Clark away, he's not as brilliant as everyone believes him to be.

Fingers rapping against his arm again, Clark brings out one of the best weapons in his arsenal at the moment: guilt. “Alfred is... disappointed.”

Finally, the keyboard sounds pause. Bruce's shoulders slump and his heart rate gives a spike, noticeable only to someone with Clark's unique abilities. “He worries too much,” Bruce says with a barely audible sigh.

Unfolding his arms, Clark quickly crosses the room and grabs the back of Bruce's abnormally tall chair. “With good reason,” he says, and swivels the chair around, forcing Bruce to face him. “Talk to me, Bruce.”

Blue eyes, a few shades lighter than his own, shift away. Guilt is present, and Clark would have never seen it if he had not forced their eyes to meet. “What do you want me to say?”

“An apology would be nice.”

“You should be tired of my apologies by now.”

Clark leans closer and Bruce turns his head, finally letting their eyes meet. “I knew what I was getting into, Bruce,” he says. “You're a stubborn pain in my ass who's probably never going to change but damned if I don't love you.”

A subtle widening of Bruce's eyes indicates surprise at the heretofore forbidden phrase, but Clark cuts off any possible protest with his lips. A kiss is hardly the glue to fix this cracking relationship, but it's a small start and right now, Clark will take what he can get.

Also, did I mention the awesome SuperBat ring I got for Xmas? Because I should have! It's made of Tungsten and has the Superman/Batman symbol etched into it. But of course, it's sized for men and it won't fit so I must wear it on a necklace. Alas.

If no update to Seireitei Mongatari tomorrow, I will at least bring up another SuperBat ficlet and/or a Thundercracker/Mirage ficlet I've been working on. We'll see. :)
