Bleach Rant
Aug. 19th, 2010 11:29 pmJust because I'm wondering if anyone else is as disappointed with Bleach lately as me I thought I'd go ahead and rant a little bit. Express myself you know.
Ahem. SPOILER ALERT. For everything. Moving right along.
First, let me say this. I know that Bleach is a shounen manga. I know that it's meant for a shounen audience. I also know that it's not supposed to be deep, or plotfully amazing. It's supposed to be people beating each other up, and getting stronger to beat each other up, and awesome powers, and endless battles and good vs evil. And all that jazz.
Also, I'm still a Bleach fan, more or less. I'm just not overly impressed with where the story is going. At all. To the point that well, it's kinda boring. So boring that I think I'll just wait for it to end before I eagerly dive into what chapters are left.
I used to think Aizen was an awesome villain. Now, I just hate him, and not because he's a megalomaniac with a god complex and delusions of grandeur. But because Tite Kubo can't tell a story without pulling current events out of his ass by either a) "I knew this all along" or b) "Well, I lied about that."
As a writer, I LOVE to create theories about what might be happening in the future. I love to either be proven right or wrong. I love to come close. I love for an author to go "ah! this is what happened" and then I can go "ohhh, how did I not get it. The clues were here, here, and here." You know what I mean, right?
Well, we can't do that with Bleach. Why? Because none of the facts we have been previously given can be taken as facts. At any one point, Kubo might jump out and have a character say they lied about this, or lied about that, just to cover up the fact that his current plot point is one giant Ass Pull.
Case in point. Aizen the VillainSue. Who apparently knew everything that was going to happen before it happened and made a plan to either prevent or handle said situation. Aizen who's apparently SO smart who planned every single step of Ichigo's evolution and created the Hyougoku first and knew Gin was going to kill him and blah, blah, blah. BUT WAIT! Aizen has already proven himself to have lied about previous statements. So is he a liar? Or is he omniscient? The world will never know. The two kinda cancel each other out. Which is sorta like a failsafe for Kubo who can't be bothered to get his facts straight.
Yes, it's a long-ass manga. Yes, it's a fight manga. Yes, I am guilty of messing up my own storylines from time to time. Yes, he's not perfect. Yes, I still enjoy his manga. Am I just a whiny reader? Quite possibly, yes.
Is it wrong of me to want just a teeny tiny bit of consistency? Is it wrong of me to desire a plot that makes sense and keeps me interested? Perhaps. It is after all my choice as to whether or not I continue to read/support his manga. And well, I thoroughly enjoy the earlier arcs, the Soul Society arc and the Hueco Mundo arc *cough*Soul Society Arc remix Arc*cough*. Which is why I'll be perfectly happy cutting off my attempts to theorize anything and just wait until he's done to see where the hell he's going because at this point, I'm bored with trying to guess and figure it out.
Rolling my eyes and commenting "oh, there's a big surprise, Aizen knew this was coming" every time I read a chapter kinda detracts from my enjoyment of it.
One Piece, on the other hand, has been sufficiently awesome lately. Though don't get me started on the whole "lava is hotter than fire" bit which was a stretch, even for One Piece. Yeesh.
So in the end, I just rant, but I still like my Ichigo (who, can I say, looked incredibly hot in the opening colored spread. *fans self*) Along with Renji, Gin, Aizen, Ukitake, Shuuhei, Kira, Urahara, Shirosaki, Stark, Grimmjow, Yumichika, Tatsuki, Kenpachi... *trails off muttering names*
And I still ADORE Kubo's art. I love to look at Bleach simply for his style, which has only improved over the years. He also is FANTASTIC at creating characters. And the world building was wonderful. His plot-crafting, however, could use some work. Okay, let's be honest, it could use a LOT of work.
I'm just saying.
Thoughts? Refutations? Curses upon my immortal soul? Feel free to share. *grins*
