Discussion: Women in Slash
Sep. 26th, 2010 11:59 pmWhat do I mean by that?
How do you, as readers and writers, perceive female characters in our slashy stories?
This question occurred to me as a result of my recent The Requiem of Janus publication. There were some points advised to my by editor that had a few plotty bits excised and it got me to thinking... how do readers really feel about women being involved in their plotty fiction?
Are they a necessary evil? Do they help to balance things out? Would you rather not have to see your men kiss those yucky women? *laughs* I mean, cause this is why we read slash, right? We want the boy on boy factor not mixing things up with women?
Personally, so long as these women don't linger and overcomplicate matters in a cliche, angsty way, I don't have a problem with them. I like the best friend role. The helpful family member even. I can even stomach my men getting it on with women (temporarily) so long as in the end, they wind up where they belong. *laughs*
But is it a deal breaker? Is it something that immediately pulls you out of the slashy story? Do you feel cheated to see one of the characters appear with a woman at some point?
No opinion is wrong. I'm just kinda curious at this point.
