Character Highlight: S'raiya Tane

dracoqueen22Good evening! Firstly, I'd like to say congratulations to a near and dear friend of mine. He was married today and I'm incredibly happy for him!
Today, I'd like to post a character highlight since I haven't done so in forever. I've also chosen a character from a series I don't give much love to, and I don't know why since I love the story so much. Ahem.
S'raiya Tane, better known as Rai to his close friends, is from my fantasy novel Aftermath, a fic that is loosely based on the main themes behind Final Fantasy (VII and VIII) fanfiction. He's the main character, but he's not the main hero. Because Aftermath is a story that takes place after the action, dealing more with the results of battling to save the world from a great evil, it gives me an opportunity to focus on different aspects of characterization. Aftermath tells what happens to the heroes in the end, from the eyes of the runner-up, the second in command, the best friend, the Seifer, if you will. (If you've played FFVIII you know what I mean).
Rai is in his mid-twenties and was born in a small town in the north of Umbra, a town called Lathe. He grew up with Haiden, who is the main character of the story, and has no siblings. His mother (Miharu) died when he was very young and his father (Hiroto) never quite understood the son who preferred reading and stories to hard work and swordplay. It wasn't so much that they didn't get along, but that Rai had been closer to his mother and his father wasn't sure how to relate to him.
Appearance wise, he has grey eyes and dark red hair, which he keeps about shoulder length but always pulled back. Before the war, he had two piercings, but they were taken from him as a form of torture. He's taller than Haiden, but not by much, and a bit broader in the shoulders. But Haiden is the more charistmatic of the two. Rai isn't exactly shy, but he's not personable. He can be cranky and grouchy with a sharp tongue. Fighting in the war has only worsened some of his more negative qualities, making him even more of a pessimist who despises foolish and/or idiotic people.
He's decent with a sword, the years only honing his abilities, but he doesn't particularly like to fight. He treats it as a necessity not something to be enjoyed. I wouldn't call him a pacifist.
He prefers liquor to beers/ale and he absolutely despises warm cereal such as oatmeal, gruel, creamed wheat.... etc. After the war, what drives him is the fact that he has no plans as for what to do next. The battle against the Ruhin happened before he could make sense of his own future.
The sword he carries is named Xiphos though he doesn't actually name it during the course of the fic. The blade is actually a gift from one of his companions.
Rai's theme songs are "Numb" and "My December" by Linkin Park.
