Tonight I bring to you another fic review, a personal commentary on one of my own fictions with some (hopefully( interesting trivia about the story along with my thoughts on the construction of it. Comments from readers are more than welcome!
Going with the proper rotation, tonight I bring you a fanfiction from the fandom Ouran High School Host Club. The story I chose is Consequences and Repercussions, a oneshot featuring the pairing of Kyouya/Kaoru. The story was actually a birthday fic for one of my more devoted readers, The Sorrowful Vampress, who gave me my first chance at diving into the Ouran fandom.

Description: Kyouya makes plans to ensure his future, and doesn't realize he's being spun into a web of his own making.
Consequences and Repercussions was a challenge from the get go. It was my first foray into the Ouran fandom, and the pairing was so odd that there wasn't much fanfiction (of decent quality) that I could read to get a feel for how the characters interact. I had to try and integrate the characterizations by watching the anime itself, since I couldn't get into the manga and didn't use it as a reference.
I decided to go with Kyouya's POV because he was the easiest to understand. I could get into his head much easier than I could one of the twins. And of course, like with most of my stories, the whole fic started with a line that came to me in a burst of inspiration.
It started with a bet.
That's the opening line to the oneshot. Thanks to Azar, I started building a plot from there. I wanted to make sure that I incorporated the conniving nature of the Hitachiin twins, as well as Kyouya's focus on reason and rationality. I also wanted to see Kyouya taken down a notch, to watch the twins beat him at his own game, but then hint to the fact that the twins were not so untouched either. There's a lot of subtext involved that made me rather giddy to write.
It was one of those fanfictions that sorta pulled itself out of me, sentence by agonizing sentence. I wanted it to be perfectly IC and believable. I wanted to capture the personalities of Kyouya and Kaoru as perfectly as possible. I wanted to do my best by Kyouya since he is my favorite character. And well, I can't help that I love the angst. I love to see strong, confident characters tilted from their world's axis. Perhaps that the sadist in me. :)
It's also a story that doesn't necessarily have a happy ending. The story is told from Kyouya's POV. We find him in his bedroom, brooding over what happened. Then he tells us what happened, not in flashback, but as though he's telling a story. By the end, we're back in his bedroom, where he's calling himself a fool. But there are hints that his feelings may not be so one-sided. Either way, from all intents and appearances, it seems as if he was played by the twins. That they turned his game against him.
I was very pleased with how the entire story turned out. As a rule, I tend to prefer KyouyaxKaoru or KyouyaxMori as pairings in this. With a slight interest in KyouyaxTamaki as well. And the feedback was pretty positive. I had many pleas for a sequel, but since I haven't had a suitable idea pop up for it yet, I don't think a sequel will be happening.
My favorite scene is perhaps near the end of the story, where Kyouya is watching the twins participate in one of their usual fake twincest shows for the squealing fangirls of the hostclub. Emotions build inside of him and as he's watching, his pencil snaps in his hand. He just stares at it, as if he can't comprehend what happened. There's something about the way I wrote that scene that has always felt so poignant to me.
