Description: Rodimus often goes home to visit his clan and Starscream tries very hard not to miss him.

For an anonymous prompter.

Starscream was a very busy scientist. Too busy, in fact, to waste time staring out the front window, searching for a sign of Rodimus’ return.

And yet, he found himself doing just that once more. Rodimus had promised to come back within a fortnight and today marked the upper end of his promise.

It was supposed to be a short visit with his clan, long enough to reassure his family he still functioned and to trade some supplies, along with delivering a note to Wrench on Starscream’s behalf. It should not have taken him very long.

Unless he was hurt. The sands were a dangerous place, and while Starscream trusted Rodimus’ abilities, it would not be beyond the realm of possibility for an errant duststorm or sand tornado or wandering, ravenous lithium-liger to waylay him.

No, Rodimus was fine.

More likely he’d opted to maximize the time spent with his mentors, his brother, this Sunstreaker he spoke so fondly of.

Rodimus talked about Sunstreaker often, and Starscream was not so stupid not to recognize the echoes of longing in Rodimus’ words. He was guilty of much the same whenever Rodimus managed to pry tales of Blurr out of him.

Except Starscream no longer visited Blurr. He had no reason to venture into the cities, seeking out his old friend and lover. Sure, he had entertained the possibility of introducing Blurr and Rodimus some day, but it was a distant consideration at best.

Rodimus had no doubt gone to visit this Sunstreaker. They would be spending much time together, laughing, sharing old stories. Sunstreaker would likely drag him off to tend to his paint -- Rodimus said Sunstreaker was obnoxious when it came to the state of one’s armor.

Starscream twisted his jaw and stared harder out the window, willing Rodimus to come into view. He knew, logically, that any time spent with Sunstreaker would be innocent. Sunstreaker was happily mated to the military leader of Rodimus’ clan. It was a relationship Sunstreaker himself had pursued, and it was by Sunstreaker’s choice that his flirtations with Rodimus ended in the first place.

Logic did nothing to quail the anxiety clinging to Starscream’s spark.

He trusted Rodimus very much. He trusted Rodimus would not be unfaithful or behave in a manner that would shatter their trust.

But Starscream was also realistic.

What hope did he have against that kind of history? Against a mech Rodimus had loved so very much, who lived with Rodimus’ clan when living with Starscream meant a semi-isolated life?

He should have gone with him as Rodimus asked.

Starscream glared at his reflection in the mirror. He hated this part of himself, this uncertain side who questioned every good thing which had ever happened to him. He had to have faith in the promises he and Rodimus made to each other. He had to believe he deserved nice things. He had--

Movement beyond the ripple of the hologram caught his attention.

Starscream froze, focusing on the motion, and caught the very moment Rodimus stepped past the projection of the hologram. He was wrapped tightly in his protective tarp, with his bag slung over his shoulder, and his optical protectors lowered.

He’d come back.

Starscream spun away from the window and leapt down to the main floor, thrusters slowing his descent. He tried to school his expression into one of bland surprise, but his spark spun and danced within his chassis, the foolish thing. He landed, feet immediately swarmed by nosy cleaner drones who must have been waiting by the doors.

Starscream waded through them, nudging the ever-eager Scuttle aside. He had the door open before Rodimus could fumble with the lock, and had to shield his face from a sudden gust of sand-choked wind.

“Wow,” Rodimus said with a big smile as he pushed up his optical protectors, and tugged down the mesh scarf from his face. “Miss me?”

Starscream yanked him inside, sand raining down from Rodimus’ tarp, much to the glee of the gathered drones. He cupped Rodimus’ face and pulled him into a kiss, tasting Rodimus’ favorite sweet treat on his lips.

Rodimus sighed happily and slid his arms around Starscream tightly. “Yeah, you did.” He grinned and pressed their foreheads together. “I missed you too, starshine.”

“Next time, I’ll go with you,” Starscream murmured, sweeping his thumb over Rodimus’ sand-dusted cheeks. “And I will dance with you.”

Rodimus’ optics lit up with delight. “Really?”

“I promise,” Starscream said, and kissed him again, so damn glad to have him home again, he’d make any promise to keep that smile on Rodimus’ face.
