The Devil's Wife
Nov. 23rd, 2010 11:49 pmGreetings, friends! Time for another fic review. It's been quite some time since I last wrote one so I hope you'll forgive my tardiness. This time, I've chosen an original fic, to follow along with the rotation I've been following.
The Devil's Wife is a short story I wrote to submit to Writer's Digest Short Story Competition. I didn't win or place or well, even get noticed. But, I quite like this fic anyway.
The Devil's Wife is written from first person point of view and the character is never directly named. She's not the wife of the devil known as Satan, Lucifer, Beezelbub.... etc. But she's the wife of a man that the general public consider a demon of a sorts. It opens with the wife being unamused. Why? Because she has just been kidnapped for the umpteenth time by well-meaning people wanting to save her from whatever spell the demon had put her under to coerce her into being his wife. She is not impressed by this.
There's a very dry, sarcastic wit to this. I really enjoy the tone. It's snarky and humorous and really makes you examine how one person's point of view on something can change it's entire meaning.
It's a tad romantic, but I'd still name this fic mostly humor.
Of course, in the end, the devil is even less amused than his wife at coming home and finding her missing. This he makes quite clear to her well-meaning captors when he rescues his wife from their clutches. She, of course, cautions him not to make them bleed too much, and waits for him to finish venting his anger. She is not blind to his faults, but embraces them instead.
I've had thoughts of expanding this further, though I'm not quite sure how. There's more story that could be told here, I just have to figure out what. I like the character of the devil's wife. She's strong and witty, and very sure of what she wants. The devil himself remains mostly an enigma, except for the snatches we get from the wife, but he is also a character I'd like to explore.
If you are interested in reading this fic, it is available on my author's website, The Den of Debauchery, here. If you'd like, I can also make it available on livejournal.
