Fanfic Rec: Samurai Champloo
Mar. 31st, 2011 08:15 pmSamurai Champloo was one of the first fandoms I ever wrote for. And now I cringe at the terrible-ness that was my first fics, but still, it was one of the first fandoms I fell in love with. I snapped up fiction as eagerly as I could. I thought everything was AWESOME.
Since then, my tastes have matured a bit and a lot of those stories proved to be not as good as I originally thought they were. But in the past five years, there is one author who remains in my favorites, whose stories have proven so well-written that I re-read them quite often, just because I enjoy them so much.
That author is Laura Bryannan.
Plainly put, she is amazing. Her writing style is unique and I love the way she describes things. Especially some of the sex scenes. *fans self* She is also one of the few writers I can enjoy who occasionally employ the use of first person (the others being Iron Dog and Sukunami).
She has two series set in Samurai Champloo universe. One is basically set in the actual series, working a relationship between Jin and Mugen (and later, between Jin and Fuu, Mugen and Fuu, and a very believable Mugen/Jin/Fuu) in around the actual events in the series. You won't really get it if you've not seen the anime, but it's worth it. Totally.
This author also has the distinction of a) making me like Fuu as a character and b) making me like het in my slashy fanfiction! *gasp* That really takes talent. Normally, I avoid het like the plague. But here I want it. I crave it. I can't wait for each het-gem to come my way.
She builds the relationship between the three of them so well that the reader can't honestly see it happening any other way. She has characterization down pat, and then expands on what the anime gives us in a believable fashion. I also adore what she did with the relationship between Jin and Yuki.
Her other long series is an AU set in the real world. I love the occupations she chose for Jin and Mugen and how she worked the two into meeting. I also thoroughly enjoy the occasional appearance of JinxYuki, MugenxYuki and *bam* JinxYukixMugen. My, how I love the threesomes. My how she writes them so very well.
So if you're a fan of Samurai Champloo, or are at least familiar with the series, please check out her work. It's incredible. She also has an original fiction, but I've not finished reading it yet. Once I do, I'll write a separate review for it.
